The Most Powerful Acts-
(The Secret Sauce)
Begin to notice and identify elements of the Pyramid. This can be a confronting process. But we can't move forward without it. With practice this will become the secret sauce that makes all the learning more powerful.
-
Notice the thoughts and emotions that come up.
-
Acknowledge the courage it takes to do this.
-
Use your values for courage and direction. Visit Keep going. for more ideas on self care.
-
Seek support from others who are also exploring.
For instance:
There is a current affairs show about an issue effecting Māori. You chose a different show and notice the thoughts: "That doesn't effect me. It's probably not that serious anyway.".
You stop and identify that these thoughts relate to "Indifference" and "minimisation".
Then the thought: "Oh no! this is on the pyramid. I'm one of those people!" Then guilt and a feeling discouragement. A lot of people avoid at this point. It's a feature of privilage that we have the choice to turn away from the perspective of 'others'.
What brought you to this site? Tap into those values. "I'll continue because I value fairness, because I value togetherness, advocacy, justice, courage"....
Just like going to the gym, this work gets easier. And you'll find that your thoughts and feelings start to change as you take in new information and perspectives.
You may want to beat yourself up at this point. Please don't!
People often have uncomfortable feelings when they realise they are not working in the direction of their values. This is learning. We can't go in the right direction until we notice we are going in the wrong direction. Your thoughts and feelings don't hurt anyone. But choosing to ignore them or be swept away by them will turn them into words and actions that will hurt yourself and others. You can do this.
In the example above you may choose to watch the show and continue to note your thoughts and feelings that come up. Keep going through the process of noticing, kindness and encouragement.
You may like to download and listen to 'Dropping Anchor" to help get you through the uncomfortable thoughts and feelings.
You may be noticing a sense of disappointment at this point. Perhaps a thought "but no one will see me doing this work". It's ok to have these thoughts and feelings. As humans we all want to be acknowledged for our efforts. Everything you do will be supercharged when you develop these skills of working through these challenging thoughts and feelings. When you speak up you will know you are authentic, when you make a mistake you will be quicker and more comfortable to fix it up. You will be able to support others who are brave enough to name their own thought processes.
